Victory For Junior Hurlers   27/04/2014

Uibh Laoire 1-06
Gabriel Rangers 0-04

Uibh Laoire are through to the First Round of the Junior B Hurling County Championship after a hard fought win over Gabriel Rangers in the Preliminary Round at a rain soaked Aughaville, on Saturday evening last.

The scoreline doesn't lie - this wasn't a classic but Uibh Laoire will not care one bit as they progressed to the next round in cold, wet and windy conditions which made good hurling, nigh on impossible. Coming in to the game, it would be a lie to say that Uibh Laoire's management team of Christy O'Leary, Con O'Leary & Jamie Cronin were over-confident of victory but no Uibh Laoire team will lie down for anyone in the heat of championship battle.

Uibh Laoire opted to play against the elements in the first half and it was to prove to be a difficult half, registering just two points on the scoreboard but most importantly, conceding just four points at the other end. The first of these points came from championship debutant Joseph Creedon, from a huge long-range free. Uibh Laoire had found themselves under serious pressure defensively but with John O'Callaghan a rock at full-back and a very willing half-back line of captain Ger O'Riordan, Daniel O'Riordan and another championship debutant, Finbarr McSweeney Jnr., Gabriels were getting nothing easy. Just on the half's end, David Dineen clipped over a close-in free to leave Uibh Laoire just two points in arrears at half -time.

The second half was to tell a different story. Uibh Laoire came out all guns blazing, showing some terrific courage and no lack of skill. With the aid of the strong breeze, Uibh Laoire's forwards were now more to the fore with Joe Creedon and Colin Tanner seeing plenty of ball & Barry Murphy working his socks off alongside them. David Dineen got the half off to the perfect start with a well executed free before Finbarr McSweeney Snr. added a great solo-effort from play. Then in the 49th minute, the game was blown open when a loose ball fell to David Dineen on the 20 yard line & the Milleen man billowed the Gabriels net. Uibh Laoire were now on a high and Dineen knocked over two more frees after some great work by substitute, Ger O'Donovan.

The final whistle was greeted by scenes of relief and jubilation as Uibh Laoire booked their place in the First Round against Dromtarriffe. This was a great display by everyone in general, with nobody failing to put the shoulder to the wheel. The six defenders and goalkeeper Rob Oldham can take great credit for conceding just four points all game and none at all in the second half. A hard running midfield of Finbarr McSweeney Snr. and Shane Galvin laid on a perfect platorm for both attack and defence while the forwards showed great battling qualities and resolve in what was not a night for forwards in general.

Credit to everyone involved and best of luck to all in the next round against Dromtarriffe, details of which will be available on the club site, Twitter & Facebook in due course.
