Keanes Supervalu Killorglin MFL Finals Div 3A 2015-05-11 23:14:00

Firies win Division 3A of  Keanes Supervalu Killorglin  County  Minor League Final.

Fires 1-17 Annascaul / Lispole 2-12 (AET)

It took extra time to separate a fancied Fires side to overcome an Annascaul / Lispole combination in the final of Div 3A of the Keanes Supervalu Killorglin Co Minor League in Cromane last Friday evening on a scoreline of Fires 1-17 Annascaul / Lispole 2-12 (AET)

It was Annascaul /Lispole who were first on the scoreboard after 5 Minutes with a superb goal from wing forward Brian Ó Cinneide. Cathal Ferriter added another point for the combined side before three outstanding points from William Courtney for Fires left the score Annascaul / Lispole 1-1, Firies 0-3 after 15 minutes of play. In a free flowing game points from Sean O'Hara, Alan Falvey and Brian Kennedy for Annascaul / Lispole  and Ciaran Flynn, Shane O'Donoghue and two from William Courtney left the sides level 1-4 to 0-7 at half time.

Annascaul /Lispole again got off to a great start in the second half with points from Ryan Ó Mainnín, Sean O'Hara and Alan Falvey to give Ananscaul /Lispole a 1-7 to 0-7 lead after 40 minutes. At this stage Firies were struggling and lost goalkeeper Luke Doran to a Black Card, however, some great defensive play by Cian O'Callaghan and the illustrious William Courtney at midfield kept them in the game. The final quarter belonged to Fires with two great points by Courtney, along with points from Cathal O'Shea, Philip Lyons, Ciaran Flynn and Conal Murphy, leaving Fires 4pts ahead with 3 minutes to go, 1-08 to 0-15.

A long ball into the Fires defence from wing back Sean Ó Nuanain from Annascaul / Lispole found 6ft 5' Max Kennedy on the edge of the square and he made no mistake finishing the ball to the Firies net to leave just 1 point between the sides and time almost up.

Annascaul /Lispole won possession from the resultant kick-out with Alan Falvey being fouled 35 metres out from goal near the side-line and Annascaul/Lispole had an opportunity to tie up matters with the last kick of normal time. As the crowd in the stand held their breath, Falvey from the hands held his nerve and saw his effort land on top of the Firies net. The sides were level 2-9 to 0-15 and extra time was required to try to separate these evenly matched sides.

Two points from Alan Falvey and one from Sean O'Hara put Annascaul /Lispole 3 points ahead, five minutes  into the first period of extra time. Then William Courney struck for Firies with a free followed by a Daniel O'Connor point to leave just one point between the sides.  Then came the goal that proved to be the winner when a mix up in the Annascaul /Lispole defence gifted Shane Kennedy a goaling chance and the Fires man made no mistake to leave the score Fires 1-17 Annascaul /Lispole 2-12 after the first period of extra time.

Both sides battled hard in the second period of extra time but no flag was raised with Firies running out just about deserving winners on a scoreline of 1-17 to 2-12.

County Committee Treasurer Dermot Lynch presented the winning shield to Firies captain William Courtney and the same player was presented with the Keanes Supervalu Killorglin man of the match  trophy by sponor Peter Keane.
