Vincent Frawley Tribute

Vincent Frawley

Hailing from Lismore, Co. Waterford Vincent was involved with Tennis in Strokestown and from 1978 in Ballina. He obtained a coaching qualification which he updates regularly by attending all coaching events. Throughout his entire tennis career he has been Treasurer, Chairperson and a regular committee member.

He ultimately became president of our Connacht branch from 1985 to 1987. In 1980 Ballina reached the final of the Connacht Senior Cup. Vincent was instrumental in bringing this team together. The then chairman of the club, Mr.Matt Farrell had the following to say at the club AGM “You do not often come across that kind of dedication very often and I can honestly say that Vincent worked harder than any club secretary that I ever worked with”.

In the 80’s Ballina Tennis Club moved to the Downhill Tennis Courts, during this period the Mayo Open Tennis Tournament was held in Ballina Town. Another tribute to Vincent and we held on to this tournament into the mid-nineties with Ballina members winning two consecutive ladies double titles. Ballina Tennis Club then moved to the Convent Tennis courts. Vincent remained involved organising coaching for schoolgoers and also with Hugh Hanly who encouraged two lady members to attend Tennis Leadership course. When the convent grounds became unavailable the ladies played with Aileen Gough the tennis leader for Crossmolina Tennis Club.

Vincent regularly competes in Veteran Events and won this event in Cork in recent years. Imagine hi delight when we opened four new flood lit courts in the centre of town. Treasurer at this time was most important when fund-raising was a priority and again Vincent was assistant as ready as ever.

To recap, when in Strokestown in 1976 Vincent was Vice-President and in 1981 was Honorary Secretary in Ballina Tennis Club. In 1996 when the club moved to The Convent Tennis Courts Vincent stayed firm in his belief in the future of Ballina and to his credit 30 years on from his role Vice-President, the club is a testament to his loyalty to the game. We also need to mention that Vincent Frawley is tremendously popular and has organised our town youth Parks Tennis Event since its inception and is a dedicated youth organiser and he continues to do so every summer.

Congratulations Vincent on your unswerving loyalty to tennis. A tribute well deserved.
