Masters Tournament 2017

Volleyball Ireland 3rd Masters Tournament Report

The Volleyball Ireland Masters Tournament was held in ALSAA on Saturday 18th November from 11am to 5pm.  There was a great buzz and sense of anticipation as all the teams arrived in ALSAA and were looking forward to a great day of volleyball and catching up with old friends and making new ones.

This was the 3rd year of the Masters Tournament and 8 teams participated this year.

  • Pool A – Newbridge, MGL 1, Young Ones, Some Spike It Hot
  • Pool B – Aer Lingus Doods, Balbriggan, MGL 2, Wine & Beer

Each team played 3 pool matches with the top 2 teams in each pool going into the semi-finals.

In the 1st semi-final The Young Ones beat Aer Lingus Doods 2-0 in a very competitive and hard fought match. While in the 2nd semi-final the winners of the tournament for the last 2 years Wine & Beer beat Some Spike it Hot with some great volleyball from both sides.

In the 7/8th place playoff MGL 2 beat Newbridge in a very competitive and fun match with the return of the former Newbridge greats Tom Landers, Martin O’Connor & Myles Wickham to the court plus the ladies Anne Marie McBennett, Pamela Behan and star guest Helen Cotter all in full swing.

While in the 5th/6th place playoff Balbriggan and MGL 1 took one set each in a very close and hard fought match with Balbriggan winning out on score difference.

In the 3rd/4th place playoff Some Spike it Hot turned out to be too hot for the local representatives, Aer Lingus Doods, again another great match with both sides providing a great display of volleyball and competition.

The final was now set with the reigning champions Wine & Beer verses the very strong contenders The Young Ones who were quietly confident and had their eye on the trophy.

The 1st set was very close early on, with both sides producing some great volleyball both in defence and attack. The Young Ones took control in the 2nd half of the set and went on to take the 1st set 20-16. The scene was now set for a cracking final and that is exactly what both teams provided. In the 2nd set again it was very close early on with point for point on both sides. However Wine & Beer were not going to give up the title easily and finished the set strongly to win 21-15.

The scene was now set with the winners of the last 15 minute set being crowned champions. Both teams played some excellent volleyball and it was point for point all the way with the spectators on the edge of their seats. With 2 minutes to go is was still too close to call and the match did go right down to the wire with Wine & Beer just winning on the final whistle by the smallest of margins 17-16.

It was a fantastic final with both teams playing their hearts out and Wine & Beer just about managing to hang on to their title for another year. Hard luck on The Young Ones who pushed Wine & Beer the whole way, no doubt they will be back again next year to go for that trophy.

Overall the 3rd Master Tournament was a huge success with all 8 Masters teams producing a very high standard of volleyball and providing some fantastic and very competitive and enjoyable matches. It was also a very happy and sociable occasion for all present.  Many thanks to all the organisers and to Aer Lingus Volleyball club for hosting the event in ALSAA.  In particular a special mention must go to Gerry White, for his continued support of the tournament, without which the day would not be possible.  We can look forward to the 4th Masters Tournament in November 2018 in ALSAA where we are planning a bigger and better tournament as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations.

For those whose appetite has been whetted by mixed recreational volleyball or those who missed the day and would like to play in future tournaments, we would encourage players to participate in the Mixed Recreational Tournament to be held alongside the Championships on 24/25 February 2018.  There are no age restrictions and it is open to all players outside the Premier League. Further information to be communicated on this in the coming weeks.
