Presidents Message

I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all our visitors, sponsors and members to Clonattin.

It is a tremendous honour and privilege to have been chosen as your Club President for the coming season and I would like to thank my predecessor John Breen for the fantastic two years in which he served as President.

I wish Club Captain J.P. Redmond and all players at every level throughout the club a successful, enjoyable and injury-free season building on the magnificent successes of last year.

To Phil Horan and all his fellow coaches, managers and back-room team, as well as the many unsung volunteers who ensure everything is in place for all our teams, I extend my deepest thanks and appreciation knowing that their dedication and commitment ensure the continued success of our club.

As with almost all voluntary sporting organisations today, our club faces significant financial challenges and in this regard we are extremely grateful to our main sponsors; Pettits Supervalu, Stafford’s Bakery and Boggan’s Motors, and all of our other sponsors for their continued support, without which we could not continue to provide the important facilities and services we do. Please support them all whenever you can.

We have made a big step up with our promotion to Division 1A, but I have every confidence that we can compete well at this level.  Our Youths’ section had an unprecedented season last year, competing and winning at the very highest level in each age section. Thanks go to all involved in nurturing the future of our rugby club. Ladies rugby has become an integral and increasingly important section of our club and our senior ladies team competed at the highest level last season. And finally, our Minis section is an inspiration to us all and these young players are the future stars of Gorey Rugby Club.

We have one of the strongest groups of supporters in Leinster, with large numbers turning out for both home and away games and I would appeal all our members to continue this support of our players by attending matches and help build up a good team spirit.

Gorey RFC is all about active volunteerism and participation. We have many talented volunteers who give freely of their time, energy and commitment to the running of our club. These members undertake a range of tasks on behalf of the club from coaching, sitting on committees, securing sponsorship to working behind the bar, preparing food, running tuck shops and many other tasks that invariably happen behind the scenes but without which the club simply could not function. I would personally appeal to all members to put their names forward to help in the running of your club, even if only for one event, as everybody’s help is greatly appreciated. It is through this volunteerism that we can continue to build on the club’s successes and to support and encourage players of all ages in the club.

One of our main sources of income is our “Ruggo” Community Lottery. This lottery funds ongoing development of the club leading up to our 50th Anniversary Celebrations. The lottery only costs €2 per week and can be paid in full (€104 per year) or by monthly instalments by direct debit. If you haven’t already signed up for Ruggo, I would appeal to you to join and help us in developing the club for the future. Contact any club official for a subscription form.

Finally, I wish all our teams a great season and I look forward to meeting you during the year.

Yours in rugby.
