Thanks to Ballygar Hurling Club for the followig notes:

UNDER 13 A Championship
BALLYGAR 2-05 : 1-5 Kilnadeema-Leitrim

Ballygar have qualified for the 1/4 final of the 'A' Championship on the back of this thrilling victory over a gallant & determined Kilnadeema-Leitrim side on Wednesday evening in Ballygar. This was an enthralling game that went right down to the wire, and one in which sparked scenes of jubilation in the Ballygar camp at the final whistle knowing they have qualified in 2nd place in the group, in what is the club's first ever venture into competing in the top grade.

Ballygar started the game in the ascendancy and raced into a 0-02 to 0-00 lead after 5 minutes of play, Killian Mannion converting a free won by the hard working Diarmuid O'Brien, and then Killian Mannion latching on to a fine pass from Simon Thomas and splitting the opponents posts from inside their half. Kilnadeema-Leitrim opened their scoring with a well taken free, but Ballygar's response was impressive, Diarmuid O'Brien finishing to the back of the opponents net following excellent work from Adrian Gavin & Ryan Mannion.

At this stage the Ballygar defense was on top with Sylvester Zwiercyzk rock solid in the full back position, and with the ever assuring Michael Flynn between the posts for the Ballygar lads it was never going to be easy for Kilnadeema-Leitrim.
Ballygar extended their lead through another free from Killian Mannion following an excellent passage of play involving the energetic James Mulrooney & the hard working Oisin McConn. With Conor Raftery & Robbie Kelly causing alot of problems in the Kilnadeema-Leitrim defense Ballygar's advantage could have been greater but for some wayward shooting.

Kilnadeema-Leitrim responded with another free of their own, and just on the stroke of half time it looked as if the visitors had eaten into the Ballygar lead when a long range free found it's way through a crowded goalmouth to the back of the net, but it was correctly disallowed for a 'square ball' infringement. This left the half time score 1-03 to 0-02 in Ballygar's favour.

With the visitors having the advantage of the slight breeze in the 2nd half, Ballygar lads knew they would have to stand tall & fight hard to come out on top. With the Quinn brothers - Mairtin & Patrick hoovering up alot of ball in the full back line, and with Pierce McDonagh excelling in the half back line & this laid the foundation for many of their attacks. Hughie Daly was causing the visitors alot of problems with his ability to win clean possession & as a result his fine through ball found Diarmuid O'Brien who finished it off in style to leave the scoreline 1-04 to 0-03 after 6 minutes of the 2nd half.

Ballygar introduced Dylan Hanley into the attack at this stage, But this game was to swing in Kilnadeema-Leitrim's favour and they were clinical in their finishing, and as a result they had turned round a 4 point deficit into a 1 point lead with less than 2 minutes remaining on the clock. Their goal been a cracking effort from the 21 yard line that gave our custodian Michael Flynn no chance of stopping.
Just when it seemed that Ballygar's effort had come up short, what was to transpire in the closing 2 minutes is testimony to the determination & the desire to win within this panel of players. When Ryan Mannion snuffed out an attack from the visitors,

Ballygar were to win a free on their own 65 metre line. From the resulting well struck free from Pierce McDonagh, Killian Mannion won the flick on from Simon Thomas & he evaded a number of tackles, and then rifled the ball to the roof of the visitors net, to turn what looked a certain defeat into a victory. From the resulting puck out Ballygar gained possession & when Diarmuid O'Brien was fouled on the 21 metre line, Killian Mannion drove the resulting free between the posts to secure a 2-05 to 1-05 victory.

The club would like to congratulate & thank every member of the panel & the management for all the efforts they have put in. To qualify in the top grade only comes as a result of alot of hard work & commitment from all involved.
We would also like to thank all the parents & supporters who once again came out in force to cheer on the team.

A special word of mention to the gracious Kilnadeema-Leitrim side, who wished us well in the final stages of the championship. We would like to thank them for facilitating us in the lead up to the game & Rest assured their group of players will have many victorious days in their club jersey in the not too distant future, and we wish them well.
