Ciara O’ Brien - Fundraising

Ciara O Brien, daughter of Pauline and Michael O Brien and sister to Emma, John and Daniel had a tragic accident recently which has left her facing her life ahead in a wheelchair. A beautiful young lady in the prime of her life when this tragedy struck, less than a week after her Debs Night and Leaving Cert Results.

All of Ciara’s family have been members of  Kinsale GAA Club for many many years – coaching, playing underage, match transport and have always supported all of the clubs fundraising events down through the years.  The club are encouraging all of our members to now support any events organised for the Ciara O Brien Trust Fund.  As well as Financial Donations (no amount too small – every euro is very gratefully appreciated), if you can give of your time to help to run an event that would be very much appreciated too - all helping hands welcome!

Instead of lots of different groups organising Fundraising events for Ciara in the Kinsale Area– it has been agreed that there will be one committee formed to co-ordinate all the various events.  Each organisation/group etc has nominated two people to sit on this committee/group.  Kinsale GAA Clubs two representatives are Mairead Cronin and Kevin Sheehan, who kindly volunteered straight away.

The first meeting of the Ciara O Brien Trust Fund Group will take place next Tuesday, 29th September in the Trident Hotel at 8.30pm.  The first event organised will be a Sponsored Walk.  At the meeting on Tuesday nightMairead and Kevin will take a minimum of 20 cards each to give out to members in the club (but the club hopefully will fill more!)   Any other person within in the club is invited to come along to this meeting  if they feel that they could take 20 cards and give them out in a work or school setting or indeed maybe pass a bunch to another club – GAA or other club.  (Kinsale Soccer Club are involving people from neigbouring clubs too).

As Ciara attended Kinsale Community School and only finished this year – they would like to organise their own walk to be held on a different date and they hope to raise 20k – well done Kinsale Community School.

There is a BBQ taking place this Sunday, 27th September at The Bulman with all proceeds going to the Ciara O Brien Trust Fund  – see poster below for all the details. Please support this event if you can – if you are unable to  attend –maybe you could  purchase a ticket to support anyway – thank you.

Club Family Morning – held Sunday, 20th September

By now you will have all received the email regarding our very successful Family Morning last  Sunday giving all the details of how the morning went!!  Despite the rain, we had approximately 250 Parents and Children who came along to play matches and meet our very special guests Jimmy Barry Murphy and Ray Cummins – who in true legend form, stood for every photo when asked and signed jerseys, hurleys and balls for everyone, braving the Irish weather!

The hot drinks department in the Marquee was very busy!!J and with plenty of treats for everyone – there were lots and lots of smiley faces despite the rainJ.

Very well done again to everyone involved in organising this event and special thanks to all the parents and children for coming along to participate and for bringing lots and lots of goodies.

It’ll be a very hard job to top all that for next year’s one !!!!!! J

GAA Training Programme Resumes in Local Primary Schools

This very successful initiative/programme has resumed in all the local schools after the summer holidays.  Heading for its third week now already it started, as normal, with Football Skills and will be moving onto Hurling in Phase 2 of the programme.  Anthony Shannon is again heading up this scheme for us. The success of these School/GAA Training Programmes has been phenomenal – with all children, both girls and boys, increasing their level of skills in all codes and this is plain to see on the playing pitch in Camogie, Hurling and Football.

We would again like to thank all the schools for giving this programme their unwavering support – your co-operation and commitment to the development of Gaelic Games in our community is outstanding.

The Club would also like to take this opportunity to thank Anthony Shannon for again running this programme on behalf of Kinsale GAA in the schools, in such a professional manner. Anthony’s commitment and dedication to the advancement of Gaelic Games in our schools is incredible and his genuine love of our National sport is evident when he is coaching all the students in the schools.   A huge amount of the success of this programme is attributed to the excellent work being done by Anthony with all the children in the various schools.

Under 12B League Semi-Final

Kinsale    V    Aghada (away)

Friday, 18th September

At 7.30pm under lights

Unfortunately, it was not to be, for our Under 12 Boys as they took on a very strong Aghada side, on their home ground, last Friday.  Aghada got off to a flying start with 3 early goals, and continued to play very well picking off well taken points during the first half.   Kinsale were  4 goals down at half time!  However, these brave young lads, with their ‘never say die attitude’ came out in the second half and started to take the game to Aghada, scoring 4 goals in the second half, they worked hard and brought the score line back to 4-6 to Aghada’s 4-11.  There were one or two near misses with the ball narrowly going wide and Kinsale were very unlucky to not have scored these goals.    There was a very large panel of players available on the night which was great to see and everyone got match time.

Well done to all the players for a great season Under 12 – roll on 2016!  And many thanks to coaches and mentors for all the hard work over the season.  See Facebook page for team photo.

Under 13B Football League - CHAMPIONS

Kinsale U13’s secured the U13 Football League title last Sunday night at wet and windy Ballygarvan. In an age group where there is no actual championship available these lads went the season unbeaten and beat closest challengers Whites Cross by a comprehensive score line.  Kinsale 5-10 Whites Cross 0-03 points.

This is a repeat of our U13 success of last year and it is very unusual for a club to win a title in consecutive years in what is now a very large Rebel Og East division. Kudos to dedicated selectors, Michael O’Brien, Barry Ferguson, Ger O’Hanrahan and Kevin  Sheehan.

Kinsale started well and continued to shine throughout the night. White Cross tried hard but Kinsale were stronger both physically and ability wise. All players contributed and played well but special mention to Luke Desmond who scored 3-5.

Other scorers;  Kian Brown 1-0, Kealan O’Rourke 0-1, Finn O’Brien 1-2, Mike Murphy 0-2

Many thanks also to the “great parents” who showed up on the night to support. Many thanks also to Ciaran Fitzgerald & his staff at  Hamlets who provided superb refreshments thereafter.

U14 County Championship Semi Final                    report submitted by Kevin Sheehan

Kilbrittain 3-6 Kinsale 2-6,

Kilbrittain proved too strong last Saturday in Newcestown for a gallant Kinsale side.  This may have been a game too far for this good bunch of players as they never seemed to get

out of 1st gear in a poor 1st half.  Kilbrittain were stronger and more aggressive and picked off their scores to lead by 8 points at half time. 3-4 to 1-2….Kinsale’ s goal coming from an opportunist strike

by Mike Murphy.

Kinsale came out re-vitalised after the break but as hard as they tried they were unable to close the gap and eventually ran out of time. Kilbrittain go on to play Lisgoold in the county final and Kinsale

will play Aghada in their own League final.

Well done to the lads and unlucky on the day but still more trophies to play for.

Next Up………….U14 Football League…………Last league game………….

New GAA coaching initiative launched in Kinsale Community School

A function was held in Kinsale Community School recently to launch a new GAA Coaching Initiative in this progressive school.  Local Clubs and Clubs in the surrounding areas (Kinsale, Sliabh Rua, Courcey Rovers, Tracton, Valley Rovers, Ballinhassig) who’s Underage members all feed into Kinsale Community School after Primary, and who predominantly make up most of the players for the school hurling teams, have come together to provide a coach to help the teachers in Kinsale Community School who are already involved in the school hurling team. This scheme is being supported by Cork GAA Games Manager Kevin O'Callaghan and local GDA Paudie O'Brien who were present for the launch. Martin Barry is the new coach and all present wished him the best of luck for the year ahead. Mr. Fergal McCarthy, Principal of the school, spoke about the huge value he places on the position of sport in a young person's education and thanked the teachers from the school that are involved in all the sports on offer at Kinsale Community. Kevin O'Callaghan welcomed the initiative and challenged the school to aim high and contest for Harty Cup honors in the years to come. Niall Murphy outlined the recent successes in hurling that the school has achieved which includes nine County titles, including successes at Munster and All Ireland level also. The recent successes of the Cork Development Squads were also acknowledged with five students from the school involved with those panels. The future certainly looks bright for hurling in KCS.
