Under 16’s                        report submitted by Pat O’Leary

The Under 16 West Cork League started in late June with a home fixture against Rosscarbery. Kinsale girls relied a lot on the younger Under 14 team to make up the numbers and it was their 1st outing playing together. Once the game progressed the team began to work well together and the confidence of the younger players especially became evident. The result was a comprehensive victory for the home side.

The next meeting was an away match to Clonakilty on July 13th. Clonakilty started very strongly with a goal within the first 5 minutes however Kinsale led by 3 points at half time despite a sluggish performance.  Kinsale upped their game in the second half and showed better fitness in this final quarter. Final score Kinsale 6 - 15    Clonakilty 5 – 8.

Under 16 girls met with Valley Rovers in the 3rd round of the West Cork League on July 16th in Kinsale.   Valley rovers had a good start with an early goal in the first few minutes, but the advantage was eroded as the home girls settled into the game and soon took the lead with a number of well taken points. Kinsale were to advance their lead further with good combined play from defence to the forwards, leaving them with a comfortable half time lead of 2 goals and 6 points.  Although Valley Rovers recovered in the second half the result was never in doubt with a final score of Kinsale 6  - 15    Valley Rovers 3 - 2.

Under 16 girls travelled to Dunmanway on Monday, 20th July for a meeting with Bantry.  This was expected to be a close encounter with both sides leading the league tables in West Cork. Kinsale dominated the opening quarter with a strong wind in their favour, however their opponents stared to counter with strong surges of play through the middle and aided by a converted penalty were to lead by 1 point at half time. With all to do against the elements in the second half, Kinsale battled strongly with a much improved defence and effective team efforts throughout the field. Despite huge pressure from their opponents Kinsale took the lead with about 10 minutes remaining and emerged winners on a score line of  2 - 12    to    2 - 8.
