Adult Championship takes centre stage:

With all the county action over for another season the center stage was firmly fixed on our club championships last week as the semi-finals were taking place over all codes in an action packed weekend. The senior and Junior Championships were where battle was taking place with the intermediate semis taking place the following weekend of the 2nd September.

In the Abbey Hotel senior championship champions Kilbride were in action against Shannon Gaels in Elphin on Saturday evening last and champions Kilbride who emerged victorious on a score-line of 3-13 to 1-06.

In the other semi-final of the senior championship also on Saturday evening last it was the battle between Clann nA nGael and Strokestown in Knockcroghery and what a battle it was with strokestown eventually emerging winners on a score-line of 4-10 to 3-11 after a Thriller in the Dominic's venue.

Separate match reports below:

Strokestown edge out Clann in Thriller at Knockcroghery:

Strokestown 4-10 Clann nA nGael 3-11.

In the semi-final of the Abbey hotel senior championship played in sunny Knockcroghery on Saturday evening last it was Strokestown who emerged with a narrow two-point victory after a Super battle with a young Clann nA ngael team and perhaps the old cliché nobody derserved to lose would have been more appropriate but unfortunately the Johnstown girls were left to rue a poor first half performance and a number of wide's which ultimately cost them.

Clann started the better with two quick points from Caoimhe Lennon and Ruth finless, but Strokestown hit back with their first goal through county star Aisling McAuliffe. This was added to with points from Niamh Beirne and Cora Devine and then Mchugh got goal number 2 to leave six between them. Clann kept battling and points through Lennon (2) and Strokestown added another two through Mchugh again. Then a third goal arived before half time when McHugh sent in a free which was deflected to the net to suddenly leave Clann in arears by nine points at half time on a scoreline of 3-04 to 0-04.

The second half started the exact same as the first with Clann getting the first two points from michele Reynolds and sub Kayleigh Shine but strokestown bounced back with another goal through Eleanor Hanley to knok the stuffing out of Clann. Tresese Lennon pulled one back for clann but Mchugh (free) and Jill Mullooly put Strokestown ten up. Then the Clann comeback began, Sinead Farrell slotted a penalty after Shine was fouled and Lennon added a point. Hanley and Beirne kept the Strokestown scoreboard ticking in what was now an end to end contest.Clann goaled again

through Reynolds and suddenly there  was only five between them. Strokestown kept the points ticking but when Finless got Clann's third goal going into injury time the lead was only two now.

To Strokestown credit though the held their nerve and added two points of their own through McHugh (2). Clann brought it back to three with a Lennon free. They were to get one last chance from a thirty-meter free but Reynolds effort went over the bar and Strokestown had held on for a deserved two-point win which sees them progress to the final on the 16th September.

Kilbride hold off gallent Shannon Gaels effort:

Elphin was the venue for the senior semi-final between Kilbride and Shannon Gaels  played on Saturday evening . The weather conditions were perfect . Favorites Kilbride didn't take long to  score with Eilish Fannon pointing a free kick earned from a foul on Siobhan Tully following an industrious run  in the opening minute . They continued with attack after attack scoring a further 2 points before Shannon Gaels opened their account with a point from Aisling McDermott.  Another Shannon Gaels attack yielded a point from Aine O Dowd  Yvonne Creighton prevented a Shannon Gaels goal when she deflected the ball  as they attacked . Kilbride dominated the remainder of the half scoring 3 more points and a well taken goal by Niamh Shanagher who caught a  long high ball from Casey Keane.  Two great runs from Siobhan Tully saw Sinead Clabby through on goal but her shot was saved but seconds later Siobhan put Fiona Tully through finishing to the net .  Shannon Gaels found it hard to penetrate the tight Kilbride defense and managed to convert two more points following good work  from the ever dangerous Aisling McDerrmott who was well supported by Aine O Dowd ,  Katie Daly and the excellent Sorcha Bruen . Half time Kilbride  2-06 Shannon Gaels 0-04.

Kilbride had the majority of possession in the second half . The forwards linked well to produce attack after attack resulting in  a further 7 points and half way through Sinead Clabby finished to the net  once again put through by Siobhan Tully on one of her trademark runs . Shannon Gaels scored a goal in the early stages from the boot of Sorcha Bruen  but could only manage to score two more points in the second half . Kilbride attacks began from the back with Rochelle Mullaney , Alice Kelly and Katie Kelly impressing with their attacking runs . Tara Taylor commanded the midfield sector ably assisted by Eilish Fannon . Christina Beirne worked hard in defence for Shannon Gaels closing down several attacks .  Final Score Kilbride  3-13 Shannon Gaels 1-06.
