Demons win Close Derby Game
UCC Demons played local rivals Neptune in front of a capacity on friday night in the Mardyke Arena. It was another big crowd for the local derby and a good game was witnessed by the large crowd. The open mins seemed tense as always in local derbies but it was Neptune who settled the quickest to race in to a 4-0 lead within the first 2 mins through scores from Michael Bonaparte. Demons came right back at Neptune through Shane Coughlan and Ciaran O Sullivan and were leading by 5 until Taylor hit a big shot to close the gap to 3 and Demons finished the 1st qtr in front 21-18.
In the 2nd qtr it was Bonaparte who was starting to dominate in the key as Demons were small due to their American Shawn Atupem sitting down due to two fouls picked up in the first. Midway through the 2nd Neptune were up by 9 until demons went on a run of ten unanswered points with good scores coming from Hosford, Ciaran O'Sullivan and Shane Coughlan. In the closing mins of the 2nd qtr Bonaparte came good again the visitors with a basket to leave Neptune leading by the minimum on a score of 46-47 entering the break.
Neptune came out in the 3rd qtr from there they left off in the 2nd qtr and really took control of the game and lead by 8 with 4 left in the qtr. Demons however looked a lot more focused in the final 3 min's and executed their plays well and it was the turn of Shawn Atupem to dominate on both sides of the floor as he chipped in with 10 of his 20 points. Demons begun to get on top but Neptune finished the 3rd with a huge three from Gary Walsh to lead by 1 again, 64-63 entering the 4th.
In the final qtr it was tense as both teams traded baskets early on. With a min to go Demons were leading by 7 when a huge Roy Downey 3 pointer followed by a Bonaparte layup after a Demons turnover reduced the Gap to 2 with 30 sec's left but when Neptune committed fouls to put Demons to the line they secured the win in great game to win on a scoreline 84-80
